Woven Emu Feather Necklace - Light Blue

Weaving is a living artform that’s been passed down through many generations. It’s a strong symbol of the survival of Aboriginal culture, and this hand-woven necklace was created by Sharni Ferrari (ne. Rowlands Beckett).

Sharni is a proud Wakka Wakka woman who homeschools her jarjums (children) on Gubbi Gubbi/ Kabi Kabi Country in Southeast Queensland. She spends alot of time weaving with Elders, women and young people in her local community and some of Sharni's woven collections are named in language to honour her culture and Ancestors. “Dhilla” translates to “long grass used for weaving” in Wakka Wakka language, which reflects the natural fibres used to create these wearable works of art.

According to legend, Emus were Creator Spirits that soared through the skies above, watching over the land and its people. They are a symbol of wisdom, guidance and connection to the earth. Dha Ngui means “Earth Emu” in Wakka Wakka language, and this woven necklace honours the Emu.

Sharni says "I believe weaving is medicine ~ It is deeply soul soothing women's work. When I sit and create my Dhilla woven jewellery, I feel grounded and at peace. I feel connected to the soul and spirit of this land, and I feel a deep respect for the women who weaved before me."
